Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior attacker Nicole Voci scored three goals and added an assist, but visiting Denison came away with a 17-10 victory over the Knights at College Stadium on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights fell behind as Denison opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game, but junior midfielder Megan Henderson and Voci each scored over the next five minutes to give the Knights a 2-1 lead.
- Junior attacker Hannah Marafioti added a pair of first half goals before Voci tallied her second of the game and junior attacker Jacqui Thorsen scored her first of the season, giving Geneseo a 6-4 lead heading into halftime.
- In the second half, Denison surged forward with a 7-1 run to take an 11-7 lead with 15:16 remaining. The Knights pulled to within two goals, 12-10, with 12:13 remaining, but the Big Red responded with a 5-0 run to put the game out of reach.
QUICK FACTS
- The Knights lost their season opener for the first time since the 2009 season, a 10-9 loss to Utica.
- Henderson finished with two goals and an assist while Marafioti scored two goals as well. Thorsen tallied a goal and two assists.
- Junior defender Caitlyn Merkel led the team with eight draw controls, scooped three ground balls and recorded three caused turnovers.
- Marafioti finished with a team-high five caused turnovers while Thorsen and senior defender Caroline McGuigan each scooped four ground balls while sophomore goalkeeper Margaret Rosaschi finished with 13 saves.
