No. 23 Women's Lacrosse Clinches SUNYAC 2nd Seed With 21-9 Win at Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior midfielder Erin Cregan totaled five goals and an assist, while first-year attacker Hannah Marafioti scored four goals to give the Knights a 21-9 victory at State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival Potsdam, Saturday

Geneseo (13-3, 6-2 SUNYAC) clinched the second seed and a first-round bye for next week's SUNYAC Tournament. The Knights will play the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal game between third-seeded Brockport and sixth-seeded Buffalo State on Friday (May 4) at 4 p.m in a game hosted by top-seeded Cortland.   

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Marafioti scored less than a minute into the game to give Geneseo an early lead. After a Bears goal at 26:35, junior midfielder Mallory Max netted 13 seconds later on an assist from senior attacker Hannah Millich to give the Knights a 2-1 edge with 26:22 remaining in the opening half. 
  • Potsdam (4-12, 1-7 SUNYAC) took a 3-2 lead after back-to-back goals by Cayla O'Connor at 21:11. Geneseo finished the first half on a 14-2 run that included three goals from Cregan to take a 16-5 advantage into halftime. 
  • The Bears got a goal back at 28:53, but the Knights responded with three unanswered goals including two from Cregan to take their largest lead of the contest, 19-6, with 19:54 remaining to put the game out of reach. 

QUICK FACTS

  • Geneseo junior midfielder Carly Cullen compiled a team-high five draw controls to go along with three ground balls, two assists and a goal. 
  • Millich finished the game with two goals and three assists to move into 14th place at Geneseo with 98 career goals and 21st with 109 career points. 
  • The Knights finished with a 35-16 edge in shots, including a game-high eight from Marafioti. 
  • Geneseo's 16 first half goals were the most in one half this season, topping a 14 goal first half against Potsdam, Tuesday (April 24).
