No. 13 Women's Lacrosse Escapes St. Lawrence With 9-8 Victory

CANTON, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior midfielder Erin Cregan notched two goals and two assists to lead the No. 13 Knights to a 9-8 victory at St. Lawrence, Tuesday. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • St. Lawrence (2-4) opened a 3-1 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Junior midfielder Carly Cullen notched Geneseo's goal at 21:21 after the Saints had opened a 2-0 lead. 
  • The Knights (7-0) scored five of the next six goals to build a 6-4 halftime lead. Junior defender Mallory Max started the run at 18:54 before first-year attacker Hannah Marafioti converted a free-position attempt to tie the score, 3-3, less than two minutes later. 
  • Sophomore midfielder Tessa Doody tacked on another free-position conversion at 10:06 before senior attacker Hannah Millich scored a man-down goal at 9:43 that gave the Knights a 5-3 edge. 
  • The Saints pulled back within one at 7:22, but senior attacker Rachel Fisher closed the first-half scoring with a tally at 4:12 off Cregan's second assist to put the visitors on top by two.
  • St. Lawrence opened the second half with back-to-back goals to tie the game, 6-6, with 19:10 on the clock, but Cregan book-ended a tally by junior midfielder Maddie Lee with two goals during a decisive 3-0 run that put the Knights up 9-6 with 14:49 left in regulation. 
  • The Saints scored with 9:25 remaining and pulled within one with 1:02 on the clock. St. Lawrence won the ensuing draw control and had two shots at the equalizer in the final 30 seconds of play. The first went wide while Geneseo junior goalie Tess McFadden saved the second with 23 seconds left to preserve the victory. 

QUICK FACTS 

  • Geneseo improved to 7-0 for the first time since 2011. The 2005 squad started with a school-record eight wins.
  • McFadden finished the game with eight saves as St. Lawrence finished the game with a 27-22 advantage in shots. 
  • Cregan was the lone multiple-goal scorer for Geneseo as seven other Knights finished with a goal. 
  • Max finished with a team-high three ground balls. 
  • Geneseo end the afternoon with a 12-7 advantage in draw controls including a team-high five by senior defender Karen Boronczyk.

Geneseo hosts Oneonta on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. to open State University of New York Athletic Conference play.
