Women's Lacrosse Fends Off Buffalo State, 12-11

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore midfielder Maddie Lee scored three goals and added an assist as the Knights survived a late-game comeback to hold off State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe Buffalo State, 12-11, on Tuesday evening at College Stadium.

Junior attacker Hannah Millich added three goals while junior attacker Rachel Fisher added a score and dished out a career-high four assists. Senior midfielder Lauren Corbett and first-year defender Cassidy O'Rourke each recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers to lead the Geneseo defense. First-year goalkeeper Halie Ruggiero made four saves in 17 minutes of play to earn her first collegiate win in net.

Geneseo opened the game on a 3-1 scoring run, as first-year attacker Tessa Doody, Fisher and Lee each found the net in the first seven minutes of play. Buffalo State answered with three straight goals, taking a 4-3 lead at the 11:21 mark, but the Knights responded with back-to-back goals from Lee and senior midfielder Kathleen DePillo to regain the lead, 5-4, with 10:18 remaining in the half. After the Bengals tied the game at the 8:38 mark, the Knights finished the half with three unanswered tallies to make it 8-5 at the break.

The Knights struck first in the second half as Fisher found Millich for a quick-stick score 6:50 into the period. The score spurred a 3-1 run as the hosts extended their lead to an 11-6 edge with 9:24 to go. The Bengals responded with a furious comeback, outscoring the Knights 5-1 over the next 8:38 to cut the deficit to one-goal with 46 seconds remaining. Senior Jenelle Lightfoote pulled in a draw control in the final seconds allowing the Knights to wind away the remainder of the clock and hold on for the win.

Geneseo will return to action on Saturday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m. when they host defending SUNYAC Champions Cortland.
