Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior attack Liz Felix scored the game-winning goal on a free-position attempt with 6.9 seconds remaining in regulation to lead the No. 16 Knights to a 3-2 victory over William Smith in both teams' season-opener, Tuesday.
Senior attack Erin Down notched a goal and an assist for the Knights (1-0).
William Smith (0-1) built a 2-0 lead with 9:13 on the first-half clock before Geneseo got on the board at 7:53. Junior attack Kathleen DePillo took a short pass from Down and cut across the Heron crease and scored on a shot inside the right post.
Geneseo drew even with 10:15 left in the second half. While attempting to start a clear attempt from behind her net, Heron junior goalie Sarah Honan lost control of the ball outside of her crease. Down, who was causing the pressure, picked up the loose ball and ran around the left side of the cage where she slipped home the game-tying tally before Honan could get back into position.
As the final seconds of regulation ticked away, Felix was awarded the deciding free position attempt on the top-left corner of the eight-meter arc following a Heron foul. Taking two steps on goal, Felix scored on a quick shot into the top-left corner of the cage for the game-winner.
Geneseo next hosts RIT on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
