Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior attacker Katey Hart scored five goals while junior attacker Tara Basile added five assists to lead the No. 18 Knights to a 12-3 victory over Buffalo State in the quarterfinals of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Lacrosse Tournament, Tuesday.
Third-seeded Geneseo (14-2) built a 10-2 halftime lead en route to its sixth-consecutive victory while advancing to Friday's tournament semifinals to take on second-seeded Fredonia at 3:00 p.m. in a game to be hosted by top-seeded Cortland. Geneseo will be in the hunt for its third-consecutive victory over the Blue Devils in the SUNYAC Semifinals after earning a 12-9 victory last year and a 10-3 win in 2013.
First-year midfielder Erin Cregan opened the game with back-to-back goals off Basile assists to put the Knights up 2-0 with 24:42 on the clock. Buffalo State junior attacker Sarah Lorusso got the Bengals (4-13) on the board at 21:14 with the first of her three goals on the afternoon, before Geneseo tallies by first-year midfielder Julia DePillo, junior attacker Erin Down and Hart extended the home team's lead to 5-1 with 15:28 on the clock. DePillo scored on a long run from the midfield, before Down snagged a Basile pass on the right crease and scored on a nice cut in front of the Bengals' cage and Hart scored on a short shot inside the left post.
Lorusso took a pass at the top of the eight-meter and dodged through traffic to score her second goal to make it a 5-2 game at 13:45, but a decisive five-goal spurt, including three by Hart, staked the Knights to an eight-goal lead that it would not relinquish. Down cashed in a Basile pass at 12:54 before Hart scored back-to-back goals in a three-minute stretch for an 8-2 lead at 9:20. Cregan bounced home a free-position attempt at 7:27 before Hart dodged from the right wing for a shot just inside the upper-right corner of the goal at 4:11.
Sophomore midfielder Kathleen DePillo opened the second half by converting a low free position attempt at 21:26, before Hart notched the Knights' final tally with 19:01 remaining. Lorusso closed the scoring with a strong run on the Knights' cage to close the scoring with 4:48 on the clock.
Geneseo junior goalie Claudia Coleates stopped six shots to improve to 12-1 on the season as the Knights out-shot Buffalo State, 28-12, including a 20-7 margin in the first half.
Hart is only two points shy of moving past Lauren Chatterton '05 for third-place on Geneseo's career scoring list with 221 points to date.
