Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Liz Felix scored three goals, including the game-winner with 3:31 left in regulation, to lead the No. 19 Knights to an 8-7 victory over Brockport in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's lacrosse action, Tuesday.
Junior attacker Tara Basile also registered three goals while senior attacker Katey Hart was credited with two goals and and assist as Geneseo (11-2, 5-2 SUNYAC) picked up its third win in five days.
The Knights jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first 11 minutes of play. Basile converted a free position attempt 50 seconds into the game before Felix got into the action 45 seconds later with an unassisted tally. Hart scored on another free position shot at 23:13, before Felix scored another unassisted goal with 19:39 on the clock.
Brockport (8-6, 4-3 SUNYAC) returned the favor with four-straight goals of its own. Junior attacker Hailey Boronczyk put the Golden Eagles on the board at 16:49 before first-year midfielder Andrea Zlinsky scored on a free position attempt at 14:34. Junior midfielder Makensie Schuber tallied a minute later before first-year attacker Jessica Boddery tied the game, 4-4, with 9:58 left in the first half.
The Knights need only 22 seconds to re-take the lead as Hart controlled the ensuing draw and out-ran the Brockport defense to feed an unchecked Basile, who converted from short range inside the right post. Basile made it a two-goal game three minutes later after scoring on a free-position pass from sophomore attacker Kathleen DePillo, before Brockport cut the halftime lead to one, 6-5, with 42 seconds on the clock. Geneseo turned the ball over out-of-bounds behind its own net with junior Claudia Coleates attempting to help on the clear. With Coleates out of position on the re-start, sophomore attacker Kelly Wall fed Schuber in front of a wide-open net for her second tally to close the first-half scoring.
Wall opened the second half with her own goal on a free-position attempt to tie the game at 28:25. With 19:40 on the clock, Hart picked up a ground ball off an errant Golden Eagle pass in front of the Geneseo net and charged the length of the field to stuff home her second goal to put the Knights back on top.
The teams traded punches for the next 15 minutes but it was Brockport evening the score with 4:27 left in regulation. Zlinsky cut from right to left in front of the Knights's goal and, after drawing two defenders, hit an uncovered Boronczyk with a feed back to the right post that she netted for the equalizer.
After a Geneseo timeout following a crucial Felix draw control, the Knights were the beneficiary of a shooting-space call with 4:02 on the clock which set up a free-position attempt. Felix buried a shot in the upper right corner of the Golden Eagle cage for what proved to be the game-winner.
Coleates was stout in net for the Knights with 10 saves, including seven in the fist half, as Brockport finished the game with a 24-13 advantage in shots. Geneseo won the draw control battle, 12-4, including three apiece by Felix and first-year midfielder Erin Cregan.
The victory clinches Geneseo no lower than the fourth seed for next week's SUNYAC Tournament. After hosting St. John Fisher on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in their final non-league game of the regular season, the Knights will travel to Oneonta on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. showdown with the Red Dragons with the winner clinching the third-seed for the SUNYAC Tournament. Win or lose, Geneseo will host a tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday (April 28) at 4:00 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined.
