No. 16 Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Rochester, 10-9

Box Score

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Liz Felix totaled five goals while senior attack Katey Hart added four goals, including what proved to be the game-winner with 4:55 left in regulation to lead the No. 16 Knights to a 10-9 victory over host Rochester, Tuesday afternoon.

Rochester (4-3) opened the scoring in the first minute on a free position shot by Cassie Mahar, but Geneseo answered with four unanswered tallies, including two-straight by Felix to start the run, in the next 10 minutes, to take a 4-1 lead with 19:45 left in the half.

Rochester answered with a 4-0 run keyed by two scores by Lauren Basil to knot the game, 4-4, with 13:10 on the clock, but it was Hart and Felix, respectively, scoring two of the final three goals of the half to give the visitors a 6-5 lead heading into halftime.

In the second minute of the second half, Felix made the Yellowjackets pay for an early yellow card with her fourth goal of the game, but Rochester answered less than three minutes later to stay within a goal, 7-6, with 26:06 left in regulation. Unassisted tallies by Hart at 25:43 and Felix at 21:52 staked the Knights to a 9-6 edge, but Rochester once again answered with back-to-back goals to pull back within one, 9-8, with 12:16 on the clock.

Junior goalie Claudia Coleates made a key save for Geneseo with nine minutes remaining when she stopped a Yellowjacket free position shot. The save loomed large when Hart scored on a free position at 4:55 to restore Geneseo's two-goal edge, 10-8.

Rochester pulled within one with 56 seconds left, but the Knights held on for their fifth-straight victory to start the season.

Geneseo out-shot Rochester, 19-11, and also built a 17-12 advantage in ground balls, including three by first-year midfielder Erin Cregan, who also totaled five caused turnovers.

Geneseo is scheduled to open the SUNYAC portion of its schedule this Saturday hosting New Paltz at 1:00 p.m. However, check back throughout the week as changes to time, date and site are likely forthcoming due to unplayable field conditions at Geneseo.
