No. 13 Women's Lacrosse Takes Down RIT, 14-5, In Season-Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior attack Tara Basile scored a career-high eight points on five goals and three assists to lead the No. 13 Knights to a 14-5 victory over RIT in their first game of the 2015 campaign. 

Senior attack Katey Hart and junior attack Erin Down each finished the afternoon with three goals and one assist apiece as the game was played at the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University.

Hart put the Knights on the board with a tally at 28:04 before junior midfielder Liz Felix made a nice move to get open for an unassisted goal at 23:44.  

RIT scored the next two goals to knot the game, 2-2. Sage Sarkis scored unassisted on a restart after a Geneseo foul at 21:34 before Corrina Mandell scored off an assist from Maegan Schmauder at 12:39.

Geneseo finished the half with six-unanswered goals to carry an 8-2 lead into intermission. Down slid a low shot past the Tiger goalie at 8:38 before Hart spun off her defender to get loose on the left side for a goal at 7:50. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Corbett finished off a nice feed from Basile at 4:09, before Basile cashed in a free position attempt at 2:58. Hart got loose on the left side for an unassisted marker at 1:55 before Basile cut across the goal for a tally with 19.5 showing to finish the half. 

Geneseo scored five of the first six goals of the second half to build a 13-3 lead with 13:26 on the clock. Basile notched an unassisted tally at 25:51, before Sarkis answered for the Tigers at 23:27. Basile juked a defender to get open for a goal at 19:40, before Down converted a pair of goals at 17:28 and 14:57. Corbett's second of the day off a Basile assist put the Knights up by a 10-goal margin with 13:26 remaining in regulation. 

RIT converted twice with 9:09 and 4:40 on the clock, before Basile netted the final tally of the game with 39 seconds remaining to close the afternoon.

Geneseo, which built a 31-14 advantage in shots as well as a 28-23 margin in ground balls, will return to action on Monday (March 16) against Nichols (Mass.) in game to be played at the Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
