GENESEO, N.Y. - In his 26th year at the helm, SUNY Geneseo men's basketball coach
Steve Minton has set the program record for career wins at 336. With the Knights win over Colby-Sawyer, Minton surpassed the mark set by Tom Pope from 1969-1994 of 335 wins.
Joining Geneseo in 2000, Minton has amassed a record of 336-294 for a win percentage of 53.3 percent. Since joining the Knights, he has helped lead the team to the conference tournament 17 times, and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2014, where he recorded his best season as head coach at 21-7. Additionally, he has led Geneseo to two ECAC Championships, coming in 2000-01 in his first year as head coach, and then again in the 2003-04 season. In the 110 year history of men's basketball at Geneseo, Minton has recorded three of eight 20-win season (2000-01, '03-'04, and '13-'14.
Highlighting 34 All-Conference athletes during his tenure is three student-athletes who went on to earn All-American honors. Joe Zera picked up Third-Team All-Americans in 2005, Scott Morton was named a Second-Team All-American in 2009, and Gordon Lyons became the third men's basketball player to earn First-Team All-American honors in 2015.Â
Including his wins during four years as head coach at Hiram, Minton is 230th all-time in Division III for wins as a head coach, out of
2,405 coaches listed by the NCAA.
