GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's basketball team couldn't pull out a late win over Brockport on Tuesday evening, falling to the Golden Eagles 65-54. The Knights move to 15-10 and 11-5 in the Empire 8 to cap off regular season action, good enough to earn the No. 3 seed for the Empire 8 Tournament and host the quarterfinal matchup on Saturday at 4 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both teams came out firing from three to start the game, with Colin Gentile and Justin Yearwood matching three's from Brockport early to tie the score at 6-6. However, the Golden Eagles offense kept up a fiery pace and went on to lead 17-10. Geneseo answered back with an 8-0 run of their own, capped off by a deep three from Trevor Hofer to take the lead.
- The Knights went on to extend their lead to seven points behind a couple of shots by Josh Garelle and a three from Jackson Casey, but Brockport closed the gap to end the half and send it to the second with the score tied at 36-36.
- Casey led the Knights offense in the second half with multiple big three's, while Garelle and Hofer added contested shots from deep of their own to maintain a late second half lead. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles were able to convert a layup in the final seconds to secure the one-point win.
QUICK FACTS:
- Hofer led the offense with 15 points on 3-4 shooting from three, while Yearwood chipped in 13 points and Casey, 11.
- Yearwood made it a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds.
