Men's Basketball Comes Up Short In Empire 8 Semifinals

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's basketball team couldn't pull out a semifinal win at home on Wednesday evening, falling to Keuka in a close battle, 55-53. The Knights finish the season 16-11 overall after securing the program's first playoff win since the 2013-14 season in the quarterfinal round.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights got off to a hot start with Jackson Casey and Colin Gentile knocking down three's to go up 8-2 early. After layups from Trevor Hofer and Josh Garelle put Geneseo ahead 12-6, the offense went cold and couldn't find the bottom of the net for six minutes, falling behind 14-12.
  • The defensive struggle continued down the stretch, with both teams fighting to get their offense going. Hofer knocked down three straight free throws after drawing a foul late, but the Knights trailed 27-23 going to halftime.
  • Geneseo's offensive woes continued at the start of the second half, but down 38-25 they went on a 13-0 run to tie the score. Casey and Hofer powered the run, each scoring six points.
  • Down by six with two minutes left, the defense stepped up and didn't allow another point by the Wolves. Unfortunately, with two chances to tie or win the game late, Geneseo couldn't make the shot needed and fell 55-53.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Hofer dropped a team-high 17 points, while Garelle added 12 and seven rebounds.
  • Pericolosi led the rebounding effort with eight.
