Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior goalkeeper Sarah Quinlan made six saves to earn her first career shutout as the Knights blanked visiting St. John Fisher, 2-0, at College Stadium on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights and Cardinals battled throughout the first half exchanging scoring opportunities, but went into the halftime break scoreless.
- In the third quarter, junior midfielder Cassidy Sturdevant beat a defender down the right flank and centered a pass to junior forward Isabella Vinciguerra. Vinciguerra fired a low shot past the goalkeeper to give the Knights a 1-0 lead just over 90 seconds into the second half.
- The Knights held off the St. John Fisher attack as Quinlan made four fourth-quarter saves to preserve the shutout.
- With just over five minutes remaining, junior midfielder Jenna Piotrowsky fired a shot off the keeper's pads, but the rebound fell to sophomore midfielder Lauren Briody. Seeing the goalkeeper out of position, Briody chipped a shot high over the defense and into the side netting, extending the Geneseo lead to 2-0.
QUICK FACTS
- Geneseo opens the season with a 3-0 mark for the first time since at least 2011. Briody and Vinciguerra became the 11th and 12th Knights to score a goal this season.
- The Knights handed St. John Fisher its first shutout in 24 games, dating back to Sept. 22, 2019.
- Geneseo outshot the visitors, 16-14, and earned nine penalty corners while holding the Cardinals to just four.
