Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team had their hopes of lifting the program's first SUNYAC Championship trophy dashed on Saturday afternoon as they fell to Cortland in four sets, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 25-13.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights caught the hosts off guard early in the first set as they jumped ahead 13-9. Geneseo wasn't able to hold onto the slim lead though as the Red Dragons took advantage of the Knights hitting errors and pulled out a 25-20 victory.
- Cortland carried their momentum into the second set and appeared to be running away with it as they held a 22-15 lead. After a kill from first-year middle blocker Madison Gamberg ended the Red Dragons run, senior setter Morgan Michalski stepped up to the serving line and helped lead a string of seven-straight points for Geneseo. The Knights went on to capitalize on its late momentum shift and took the second frame 25-23.
- The Red Dragons stepped their game up on both sides of the ball in third and fourth sets, as they recorded a .295 hitting percentage in the final two sets, while holding Geneseo to a .038 hitting percentage. Cortland didn't allow room for a comeback attempt and closed out the match with scores of 25-16 and 25-13, respectively.
QUICK FACTS
- Michalski paced the offense with a match-high 36 assists, while junior libero Emily Haber led the defense with a match-high 29 digs.
- Outside hitters Isabella Imbo and Linda Rossi each tallied ten kills, while sophomore Madison Popielski led all attackers with a .121 hitting percentage on nine kills, five errors, and 33 attempts.
- The championship appearance marked the third-straight for Geneseo, and they have compiled a 24-3 regular season SUNYAC record over those seasons.
