Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore guard Kevin Crockett scored a career-high 23 points, including 6-of-13 from three, but it was No. 23 Plattsburgh taking the 76-72 road victory, Saturday, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's basketball action.
The Knights (17-8, 11-7 SUNYAC) are the fifth seed for next week's conference tournament and will play at fourth-seeded Oswego on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the semifinals on Friday at top-seeded Plattsburgh at 7:30 p.m.
Junior guard John Decker had 11 points while first-year guard CJ Burke added nine points, all of which came from the free-throw line, eight rebounds and five assists in the setback. First-year forward Jonathan Patron led the way for the Cardinals (21-4, 16-2 SUNYAC) with 22 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
Trailing, 17-11, at 11:28 in the first half, senior guard Kevin Zabransky scored from long range to bring Geneseo within three, 17-14. Plattsburgh responded with an 8-2 spurt to extend their lead to nine, 25-16, at 7:59.
Down by four, 32-28, with 1:51 to play in the half, Crockett sank a three from the top-right corner to make it a one-point game, 32-31. The Cardinals scored four of the final six points in the period to take a 36-33 edge into halftime.
Crockett completed a three-point play to open the second half and tie the game, 36-36, but Plattsburgh answered with a 9-0 run to go ahead, 45-36, at 16:54. The run was capped by a fastbreak dunk by senior guard Kyle Richardson, who finished the day with 21 points and nine rebounds for the visitors.
The Cardinals maintained at least a six-point lead until just under five minutes on the clock. Trailing, 67-58, with 4:52 to play, the Knights went on a 10-0 run, eight of which came from Decker, to take a 68-67 lead at 2:13.
Following a pair of free-throws from each team, Plattsburgh senior guard Edward Correa made a three with 1:09 on the clock to put Plattsburgh up by two, 72-70. Burke made two free-throws in Geneseo's next possession to tie it up, 72-72, with 43 seconds remaining.
However, the Knights were unable to find the back of the net for the remainder of the game as the Cardinals made four of six free-throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Geneseo's two members of the Class of 2016, Zabransky and guard Connor Keenan, were honored in a brief senior day ceremony prior to the game.
