Tennis Tops Nationally-Ranked St. Lawrence, 5-2

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior Amanda Rosati surpassed the program record for career match wins with victories at number-three singles and number-two doubles as the Knights defeated St. Lawrence 5-2 Wednesday. Rosati's doubles partner, junior Cat Crummey, also was a double winner by capturing her singles match. The Knights, ranked 19th in the ITA Northeast Region, captured two doubles matches and three of the four singles matches played to completion.

"It's a big win for us, beating a team ahead of us in the regional poll and ranked nationally," said Coach Jim Chen. "Our second and third doubles teams put us in a commanding position going into singles and the middle of our singles lineup pulled out the victory. Everyone played well."

St. Lawrence (15-4) came into the match ranked 14th in the Northeast Region, 37th nationally, and on a five-match win streak. The match was played to a decision, ending when one team reached five points.

Rosati now has 109 career wins in her four years, 59 in singles and 50 in doubles. She came into the match tied at 107 victories with one of her former doubles partners, Sarah Shields '13. Rosati is within two of tying the career mark for wins in singles and three short in doubles.

Geneseo (14-3) had strong performances in the doubles, as Rosati and Crummey took an 8-2 decision at number-two and the number-three team of first-year Anika Pornpitaksuk and junior Mai Hashimoto captured their match 8-4. The Knights were close to claiming all three doubles points, as senior Minxuan Yuan and junior Marylen Santos had a late-set lead in the number-one match against Elkie Vandenbeemt and Morgan McNeal before losing 8-6. The Saints' duo was ranked no. 13 in the Northeast Region.

The doubles team of Hashimoto/Pornpitaksuk is now 4-1 for the spring portion of the schedule, while Crummey/Rosati improved their record to 5-2. After the conclusion of the doubles matches, due to the cold weather and forecast for rain, the singles matches were moved to Mendon Racquet Club. Senior Dexuan Yuan (number-four) joined Crummey and Rosati as victors in the singles.

Crummey also reached a significant number with her two victories. She has recorded 41 match wins this season (21-4 in singles, 20-5 in doubles) which ties Shields for most wins in a season. Shields went 41-3 in 2009-10.

A pre-match ceremony honored the contributions of seniors Rosati, M. Yuan and D. Yuan. All four-year participants in the program, each has been a part of four consecutive SUNYAC championships and next month will take part in their fourth NCAA Tournament.
