BOSTON, Mass. - SUNY Geneseo senior Kristen Gottstine broke the school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.66 while first-year Isaac Garcia-Cassani ran the mile in 4:17.21 to put put him ninth all-time in Geneseo history at the Valentine Invitational this weekend hosted by Boston University.
"We try to provide our student-athletes with the strongest competition and the Boston Valentine Invitational has always been one of those great opportunities to set a personal record," said head coach Chris Popovici. "As a coaching staff, we are very happy about the performances this weekend. They've put the work in since the summer and it's showing. The women were all on their second or third event of the day but they went out, competed hard and as a result won their heat. Breaking the school record by three full seconds is just a testament to their hard work and commitment."
Senior Keira Wood, junior Kylie Ryan, first-year Lauren Bamford and first-year Madelyn Schwartz also broke the Knights' record in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:58.39. Ryan ran the 400-meter dash in 59.21 followed by Schwartz (59.95) while Wood finished with a time of 2:14.48 in the 800-meter run.
Sophomore Marissa Bellusci took eighth place in the mile in a personal-best time of 5:08.96
Junior Michael Segelin (22.56), sophomore Austin Donroe (22.67) and senior David Layman (22.97) posted the second, third and fourth-best indoor 200-meter times in school history. Segelin, Donroe, senior Ben Schwartz and sophomore Connor Christian also ran in the 4x400-meter relay (3:25.99).
The Knights are set to compete at the Cornell Sunday Invitational tomorrow before competing at the Golden Eagle Invite hosted by Brockport next Saturday (Feb. 21). Events are set to begin at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively.
