Box Score DALLAS, Pa. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Justin Ringen scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Knights to an 88-63 victory over host Misericordia and garner MVP honors of the McCarthy Tire Laurel Line Tournament, Saturday.
Sophomore guard Charlie Zaepfel scored eight points and dished out a tournament-record 12 assists to join Ringen on the all-tournament team for Geneseo (3-0).
"Justin was a very deserving MVP and I was glad Charlie was recognized for all he did for us," said head coach Steve Minton. "Charlie found guys tonight and helped his teammates get some good shots. Any time you win a championship, it's a great feeling. We beat two good teams this weekend and I am proud of our players."
The Knights got out of the gate quickly for an early 16-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Misericordia pulled within 10 points, 24-14, with 9:17 on the first-half clock, but the Knights put together an 11-4 spurt to build a 35-18 lead with 4:34 on the clock en route to a 46-24 lead at half.
Geneseo led by as many as 28 in the second half as Ringen scored 10 points, including 6-of-6 free throws, to lead the Knights to their third-consecutive victory to start the 2015-16 campaign.
Sophomore guard Kevin Crockett added 11 points and dished out four assists while first-year forward Jack Manke totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double in the win.
The Knights open the home portion of the 2015-16 schedule on Tuesday (Nov. 24) with a 7:00 p.m. visit by Morrisville.
