Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Meaghan Johnston and senior midfielder Marissa Benson each record a goal to lead the Knights to a 2-1 victory over visiting Oswego in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, Thursday night.
"We discussed after the game that it's nice to get a win even when we're not playing our best," said head coach Nate Wiley. "As strong as we were in the first half, we definietly had some stretches in the second half where we didn't play as well as we wanted. We do preach a lot that if you play good soccer, the results will come. However, sometimes you need to find a way to get the win even if you're a bit off and that's what we did tonight."
In the 21st minute, Johnston scored her second goal on the year to put Geneseo on the scoreboard. Johnston knocked in a score after a defender mishandled the ball in front of the goal following a corner kick by senior forward Kelsey Raschke.
In the 55th minute, Benson tallied her first goal of the season to make it 2-0. Benson tapped in the ball after a shot by Raschke hit off the crossbar and bounced directly in front of the net. Raschke's shot was set up by a nice cross from the right side of the field by sophomore forward Leah Greene.
The Lakers made it a one-score game in the 76th minute after a goal by junior forward Nicole Perniciaro off an assist from sophomore midfielder Emma Geyer but it was the Knights holding on for the win. Oswego (7-6-1, 2-4-1 SUNYAC) finished with an 8-7 edge in shots as Geneseo first-year keeper Emily Janiszewski made four saves.
The Knights (9-3-1, 4-2 SUNYAC) return to action this Saturday at home opposite Cortland. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
