Box Score HENRIETTA, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Gordon Lyons earned All-Tournament honors and scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his sixth-straight double-double but it was fourth-seeded Roberts Wesleyan capturing the 49th-Annual Wendy's College Classic Championship, 75-63, Saturday night. It was the first time the two teams have met in the championship game.
"It was just a great basketball game, a lot of fun to be a part of and I know our guys enjoyed themselves," said haid coach Steve Minton, "In my fifteen years here this game falls in the top five because I really enjoyed the competition from start to finish. A little too much Tyrel Dixon (Tournament MVP), who was amazing today playing in 40 minutes like Gordon. Roberts Wesleyan took over in the second half in terms of rebounding and got a lot of second chance opportunities which really played into their victory."
Senior guard Connor Rogers had 13 points and handed out four assists, while senior guard Andy Drescher, also an all-tournament selection, added eight points.
With the game tied at 9-9 with 13:56 on the clock, the teams would trade buckets for the next nine minutes as neither would lead by more than four points.
At 4:05, Lyons made a fast break lay-up to tie the score at 25-25, but the Redhawks responded by scoring five-straight points to go up 35-30, the largest lead of the first half.
With 1:21 remaining in the first half, Rogers hit a back-door lay-up to cap a 7-0 run for the Knights. Leading 34-32 with just seconds on the clock, Roberts Wesleyan hit a jumper at the buzzer to make it a tie game at halftime.
At the 13:14 mark, the Redhawks converted a three-point play to lead, 52-38, and cap an 18-4 run to open the second half. With 8:30 left to play, Lyons hit a lay-up off a backcourt steal to cut the deficit to five, 53-48, but that's as close as the Knights would get for the remainder of the game.
Geneseo returns to action Monday, Dec. 8th, at home against Medaille. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
