Binghamton, N.Y. - Juniors Cat Crummey and Mai Hashimoto captured their singles matches, closing out Plattsburgh 5-0 in the first round of the SUNYAC championship tournament. The win moves the Knights into the SUNYAC championship semifinals, one step closer to their fourth consecutive conference title.
"We are in mid-season form in both singles and doubles," said Coach Jim Chen. "Nevertheless, we take nothing for granted and will have to continue to play well to advance."
The doubles teams of Hashimoto/junior Marylen Santos, Crummey/senior Amanda Rosati and senior Minxuan Yuan/sophomore Maggie Hale all won their matches, giving Geneseo a 3-0 lead going into singles. In the SUNYAC championship format, once a team has a match-clinching five points, the remaining matches are left unfinished. Singles wins by Crummey and Hashimoto supplied the necessary points.
The win was Geneseo's 20th consecutive win against SUNYAC opponents, with 10 of those coming in conference tournament play. The Knights' last loss to a conference team was a regular season defeat in September 2012, and since September 2006, the team has won 62 of 63 matches against SUNYAC opponents.
Geneseo moves on to face Cortland, a 5-0 winner over Oswego, in Saturday's semifinals, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. The two teams met last Friday at Cortland, with the Knights taking a 9-0 victory. The winner will advance to Sunday's championship at 10 a.m.
