Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Kayla DeAngelis tallied two goals and an assist, while senior forward Kerry Hosford scored the eventual game-winning goal to lead the Knights past host Oneonta, 6-5, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) field hockey, Saturday afternoon.
"Starting the SUNYAC season off with wins over two of the top team in the conference speaks to the heart and the hustle we are playing with right now," said head coach Jess Seren. "We took the confidence we gained in yesterday's (2-1 victory at New Paltz) and picked up today right where we left off against Oneonta."
Oneonta (6-3, 1-1 SUNYAC) scored off a rebounded shot in the third minute of the game, but DeAngelis responded in the 13th minute with an unassisted tally to tie the game, 1-1. Oneonta would score in the 20th minute on the first of consecutive goals by Ashley Morgan, but Knights quickly answered as sophomore forward Sarah Malinak took a feed from DeAngleis and scored from the left post in the 22nd minute. Morgan found the net again on a shot from the top of the circle following a penalty corner to stake the Red Dragons to a 3-2 lead in the 32nd minute heading into halftime.
Senior midfielder Katie Farley got into the action early in the second half, converting a shot into the right corner of the goal off a drop pass from Hosford to make it a 3-3 match in the 42nd minute. Oneonta would again tally less than three minutes later to take a 4-3 lead, but first-year midfielder Liz Doherty would convert a pass from senior defender Bridget McGovern from short range for the game's fourth tie, 4-4, in the 49th minute.
DeAngelis and Hosford would finally make it three-straight goals for the Knights to take a 6-4 lead with less than 10 minutes to play. DeAngelis' second goal came off a rebound following a scramble in front of the Oneonta goal in the 53rd minute, before Hosford collected a back pass from Malinak and blasted a shot into the right corner of the goal.
Oneonta pulled back to within one in the 67th minute when a long shot from outside the circle deflected off a Knights' defender and past sophomore goalkeeper Dayna Mercer , but Mercer withstood two more late scoring chances to preserve the victory.
The Knights (5-3, 2-0 SUNYAC) will return to action on Tuesday, hosting SUNYAC-rival Morrisville for a 4:00 p.m. faceoff at Upper Alumni Field.
