Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Kerry Hosford tallied a game-tying goal in the second half, but it was No. 15 Cortland scoring the game-winning goal with no time on the clock to steal a 3-2 victory, Saturday afternoon, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) field hockey action.
Tied, 2-2, Cortland drew two penalty corners with no time on the clock. During a scramble in front of the Geneseo goal during the second attempt, Cortland's Amber Czaja was able to get a shot off in a crowd of players and score the game-winner for the Red Dragons.
"It is a bittersweet loss because it is tough to be disappointed with the way we played," said Geneseo head coach Jess Seren. "I thought we owned the second half especially. It was a great match between two great teams and we unfortunately came out on the losing end. If we see them again in the postseason, we'll be ready to go."
Cortland (9-2, 4-0 SUNYAC) got on the board in the 13th minute after Emily Woods took a shot that was saved by Knights' sophomore goalkeeper Dayna Mercer, but then tapped home the rebound in the middle of a scramble in front of the net.
The two teams played the rest of the half scoreless as Cortland built a 10-4 edge in shots during the first period.
The Knights answered back in the 40th minute as first-year midfielder Liz Doherty took a rebound off the goalie and shot it straight to the net for the equalizer. The Red Dragons responded two minutes later as Erin Smith stick-handled along the right end line and scored off the near post to give the visitors a 2-1 lead in the 42nd minute.
Geneseo would again tie the game in the 51st minute as Hosford controlled the ball off a penalty corner and scored after three-straight attempts from close range for the equalizer.
Mercer was credited with a season-high 13 saves as the Knights (8-6, 4-1 SUNYAC) lost their first SUNYAC match of the season. Cortland improved to 9-2 and 4-0 in the conference.
Geneseo will be back in action on Wednesday (Oct. 23) with a road match at Brockport for its last regular season SUNYAC game. Faceoff is set for 6:00 p.m..
