GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team opened Empire 8 play in dominant fashion on Saturday, cruising to a 5-0 shutout win over Utica University at College Stadium. The win, part of the Morgan's Message Dedication Game, moves the Knights to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Geneseo wasted little time getting on the board, as Ella Greico scored off a feed from Olivia Bottoni just past the 13-minute mark to put the Knights up 1-0.
- Geneseo doubled its lead before the end of the first half, as Halle Senfield converted a Greico assist to make it 2-0.
- Lauren Rey extended the lead to 3-0 shortly after, scoring off a feed from Aubree Wenner.
- The Knights pulled away in the third quarter, scoring twice in a nine-minute span — Greico struck again off a Kyra Giannelli assist to make it 4-0, and Senfield added her second of the game, assisted by Ava Harman, to push the score to 5-0.
- Geneseo controlled the game throughout, out-shooting Utica 15-4 and holding a 15-3 edge in penalty corners, while Bridget Schafer and Alessandra Burke combined to keep the shutout intact in net.
QUICK FACTS:
- Greico and Senfield each scored twice, while Rey added a goal of her own; Giannelli, Wenner, Bottoni, and Harman each tallied an assist.
- Schafer made two saves in 45 minutes of work, and Burke stopped one shot in relief over the final 15 minutes to preserve the shutout.
