Softball Sweeps RIT In Home Opener

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team hosted its home opener on Wednesday afternoon against RIT, and picked up a sweep with scores of 9-4 and 2-1. The Knights improve to 12-7 with the wins, and will turn their focus back to Empire 8 play this weekend as they travel to SUNY Poly and Utica.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • RIT jumped on the Knights early in game one, putting a run on the board in the first inning on a double to center. Geneseo responded in the second as Lauren Babich led off with a single to left. Lauren Bieniek followed with a double to center, scoring Babich and advancing to third on a passed ball. Bieniek scored on a wild pitch shortly after to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. With no outs, Jane Reilly and Alyssa Siegmann drew back-to-back walks. The base runners executed a double steal, as Siegmann stole second and Reilly stole home to extend the Knights lead to 3-1. Siegmann later scored on a throw-down to second, giving the Knights a 4-1 advantage heading into the third.
  • RIT got a run back in the third on an RBI single. In the bottom half of the inning, Ray Schumacher smacked a double to center and Babich followed with a single up the middle to bring Schumacher home, stretching the Knights lead to 5-2.
  • After a quiet fourth, RIT scored two runs on three hits to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Knights answered back once again with Bella Nadzan ripping a two RBI single, followed by an RBI single from Amanda Audia, making the score 8-4.
  • Geneseo picked up another run in the sixth as Sierra VanDerwarker worked a walk and scored on a wild pitch later on. The Tigers couldn't mount a rally as Geneseo secured a 9-4 victory in game one of the set.
  • In game two, Geneseo broke through after five scoreless innings. Babich drilled a triple to center and came home on a single from VanDerwarker. Molly Griffin followed with an RBI single, giving the Knights a 2-0 lead.
  • RIT answered with a run in the top of the sixth, but that would be all the scoring for either side as Geneseo secured a 2-1 victory.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Nevaeh Ross picked up the win in game two, tossing 7.0 innings and striking out eight while only allowing one run.
  • Griffin highlighted the offensive effort in game one with a double and a triple.
  • Geneseo stole a combined five bags on the day.
