Softball Splits Doubleheader At Utica

UTICA, NY: The SUNY Geneseo softball team traveled to face the Utica Pioneers on Saturday afternoon. The Knights split the doubleheader, defeating Utica 18-4 in game one before falling 11-6 in the second. Geneseo now holds a 13-8 overall record and stands at 4-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Geneseo stormed out of the gate, racking up seven runs in the first inning. Ray Schumacher and Lauren Babich sparked the offense with back-to-back RBI singles up the middle, followed by an RBI single from Gabriella Smith. Molly Griffin then capped the inning with a grand slam. The Pioneers answered with a run back in the bottom half, cutting the lead to 7-1.
  • The Knights added four more runs in the second, fueled by singles from Lauren Bieniek, Bella Nadzan, and Brooke Fraas. Schumacher kept the momentum going with a towering home run in the third. The Pioneers responded with a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning to make it 12-4.
  • Geneseo continued to string hits together in the fourth, plating six more runs to put the game out of reach. That would be all the scoring, as Geneseo secured a dominant 18-4 victory in game one.
  • In game two, Geneseo jumped on the board immediately with a lead off home run from Fraas. Utica answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs to take the lead, then added another in the second to go up 4-1.
  • Geneseo chipped away in the third with an RBI single from Emily Sylvanus, but Utica responded with two runs on four hits in the fourth. The Knights put together a three-run fifth, while the Pioneers countered with five runs in the inning to extend their lead.
  • Geneseo added a run in the sixth, but it wasn't enough, as Utica secured a 11-6 victory to take game two.
