Softball Sweeps SUNY Poly, Hits Three Home Runs

UTICA, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team powered its way to a sweep of SUNY Poly on Sunday afternoon, hitting four home runs en route to wins of 5-2 and 7-1. Geneseo moves to 15-8 overall and 6-2 in Empire 8 action.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In game one, Molly Griffin gave Geneseo its first run in the third with a solo home run. The Wildcats responded in the fifth with a solo shot of their own. The Knights added two runs in the sixth, as Brooke Fraas worked a leadoff walk and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Ray Schumacher. Lauren Bieniek capped the inning with an RBI single.
  • Geneseo added to its lead in the seventh when Gabriella Petroski opened the frame with a home run. Fraas came up clutch a few batters later with an RBI triple, pushing the lead to 5-1.
  • The Wildcats added a run in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn't enough as Geneseo clinched a 5-2 victory in game one. 
  • In game two, Geneseo got a run on the board in the first inning and SUNY Poly countered with a run in the second. The Knights came alive in the fourth, scoring four runs highlighted by a three-run shot from Griffin.
  • The Knights added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run single from Petroski. The Wildcats couldn't bounce back as Geneseo completed the sweep with a convincing 7-1 win.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Griffin homered in both games against the Wildcats, tallying four hits, four RBIs, and three runs scored.
  • Fraas picked up her team-leading third triple of the season in game one, while Bella Nadzan went 3-for-4 at the plate in game two while scoring a run.
  • Petroski threw seven innings in game one while striking out twelve and only allowing two runs. Ross threw all seven in game two, only allowing five hits and one run to get the win.

The Knights will come back home to face Elmira on Wednesday, April 15 starting at 3 P.M.
