Women's Lacrosse Defeats Oswego In Overtime Thriller

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Oswego 15-14 in overtime at College Stadium. Rosemary Mahoney capped off the thrilling victory, netting the overtime game-winner just over a minute into the extra period.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After relinquishing an early goal, the Knights quickly bounced back to take a 2-1 lead behind goals from Grace Reyna and Mahoney. The Knights would go on to keep the score tied at 4-4 at the end of the first quarter after Hannah Ruller found the back of the net with just 27 seconds on the clock.
  • Katie Rajkowski and Emma McGuigan put Geneseo ahead by two with a pair of unanswered goals inside the first five minutes of the second quarter, but the Lakers had the answer down the stretch before halftime and ended up with a 9-8 advantage before the buzzer sounded.
  • Despite two goals from Ruller and one from Lila Warner in the third quarter, the Knights faced a two-goal deficit heading to the final 15 minutes of action. Geneseo's defense stepped up in the final frame, only allowing one goal from Oswego. The Knights stout defensive effort allowed a goal from Warner with under a minute to play to tie the game at 14 and send it to overtime.
  • In the overtime period, Violet Piccinini won the draw control, setting up the offense and Mahoney to score the game-winner on the opening possession.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Rajkowski led the offensive effort with four goals, while Mahoney, Ruller, and Warner all chipped in three goals.
  • Piccinini tallied a game-high nine draw controls as well as three caused turnovers to lead the defense.
  • Teagan Culhane and Lauren Russell each played a half in goal, combining for seven saves.
  • The victory also marked the first at Geneseo for head coach Julie Decker.
