Softball Opens Season With Wins Over Babson and UNE

CLERMONT, F.L. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team began its season on Sunday morning in Clermont, F.L. with a pair of wins over Babson and the University of New England. The Knights shut out Babson 8-0 in six innings, then followed it up with a 5-2 win over the UNE.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Gabriella Petroski and the Knights defense were on fire in the opening game against Babson, with the early innings highlighted by a great double play turn from Brooke Fraas and Bella Nadzan in the top of the second. The Knights then opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third, with Lauren Babich driving in Claire Kubiak for the first run, follow by Ray Schumacher picking up a two RBI double, driving in Nadzan and Babich.
  • Petroski continued to shut out the Beavers, while Geneseo's offense came alive in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five more runs to earn the win in six innings. Babich opened up the scoring with a two RBI single to right field, followed by singles from Fraas and Nadzan to secure the final three runs for the 8-0 win.
  • In the second game, UNE got on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. However, Nevaeh Ross stepped up at the plate for Geneseo to tie the game the next inning, ripping a single to right field to score Gabriella Smith and Babich.
  • With Ross on the rubber and the Knights defense holding UNE off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, Fraas helped put Geneseo in front by smacking a lead-off triple in the fifth inning, allowing Emily Sylvanus to drive in the go-ahead run with a ground ball to the opposite side. Following a double from Schumacher, Babich added another RBI with a single to left field. Sylvanus capped off the scoring with a single to center field in the sixth, scoring Jane Reilly.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Babich and Fraas led the offensive effort, both hitting .429 on the day, while Babich tallied four RBI's and three runs scored. Sylvanus went 2-3 on the day, while Nadzan finished 2-4 with both recording a pair of RBI's.
