Hockey Extends Win Streak To Five, Handing Utica First UCHC Loss

UTICA, NY: The SUNY Geneseo men's hockey team came away with a huge win on Friday night over No. 6 Utica, defeating them 5-3. The Knights move to 15-6-1 overall and a UCHC record of 11-3-0 while Utica falls to 16-6-0 and 12-1-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Geneseo got on the board early, scoring their first goal two minutes into the period. Sterling Wolters found a wide-open Jack McDonald in the slot, firing one above the goaltender's blocker.
  • Utica tied it up a few minutes later but a mistake by the Pioneers allowed for a 2-on-1 breakaway goal for the Knights, with Sean Melso finding the back of the net with nine minutes left in the first. Utica answered back and ended the first tied 2-2.
  • Filip Wiberg gave Geneseo the lead, with his shot deflecting off a Utica player and into the back of the net. The Knights added another at 12:17 with a goal from Payne Gatewood. Alex Dameski found Gatewood across the crease for a onetime, extending their lead to 4-2.
  • Utica cut the lead to 4-3 with a goal seven minutes into the third. But the Knights remained strong and secured their win with an empty netter from Carter Diceman. Geneseo defeats No.6 Utica 5-3.
