GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team opened the scoring in a tight third quarter and held on down the stretch Saturday, defeating Hartwick 3-1 in Oneonta. The win moves Geneseo to 7-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Empire 8 play. Ella Greico highlighted the win by scoring the first goal of the game, which marked her 56th career goal making her the program's new all-time leading scorer.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both teams were held scoreless through the first two periods, with Hartwick holding the edge in shots and penalty corners but unable to beat Bridget Schafer in the Geneseo net.
- Geneseo broke the deadlock late in the third quarter, as Ella Greico buried a feed from Aubree Wenner at the 32:24 mark — the goal made Greico the program's all-time leader in career goals scored, pushing her total to 56.
- Hartwick answered just 89 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1, but Geneseo responded immediately, as Ava Harman scored an unassisted goal at 34:56 to put the Knights back in front, 2-1, heading into the fourth quarter.
- Harman added an insurance goal in the fourth quarter, converting a feed from Halle Senfield at 50:52 to extend the lead to 3-1.
- Geneseo's defense and Schafer held firm the rest of the way, fending off a late push from Hartwick to close out the win. Schafer finished with five saves, while Geneseo out-shot Hartwick 18-13 for the game.
