HAMBURG, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's basketball team opened up 2026 with a bang, defeating Hilbert 82-68 on the road on Saturday afternoon. The win marks the Knights third-straight win as they improve to 5-4 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Geneseo got off to a hot start, gaining an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes behind four points from both Josh Garelle and Robert Pericolosi. James Burton and Colin Gentile joined in on the scoring, converting a layup and a three-point shot on back-to-back possessions to improve the lead to 15-4.
- The Knights kept the momentum going in the first half, extending the lead to as many as 18 points following a three from Jaiyden Jones, then a steal by Burton and fastbreak layup by Jackson Casey to make it 26-8.
- The Hawks pushed back in the closing minutes as they cut the deficit all the way down to six, but Geneseo kept the momentum on their side going to halftime as two-straight layups from Josh Garelle in the final minute brought the lead up to 11 at 43-32.
- Hilbert quickly cut the lead down to six to open the second half, but after consecutive jumpers from Pericolosi brought the lead to 12, the Knights kept the pressure on Hilbert on both ends of the floor for the remainder of the game, holding a double-digit lead for all but 16 seconds of the remaining game.
QUICK FACTS:
- Pericolosi and Garelle were excellent in transition for the Knights, as they both scored 19 points after contributing to a total of 30 fastbreak points from Geneseo in the game. Trevor Hofer tallied 15 points for the offense as well, while Casey chipped in 10.
- Casey and Pericolosi were key members of the defensive effort by Geneseo, forcing 16 turnovers in the game and holding the Hawks to just 11 second half field goals.
