HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's basketball team earned a 79-75 victory at Houghton on Saturday afternoon. The Knights improve to 10-7 overall and 6-2 in Empire 8 action with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Knights came out strong, with Colin Gentile draining a three in the opening four minutes to help take a 7-2 lead. Houghton would battle back in the first half, tying the score at 21-21 with eight minutes left to play.
- Geneseo took control of the game down the stretch of the first half, going on a 18-4 run, capped off by an and-one from Josh Garelle to make the score 39-25 with two minutes left on the clock.
- The Knights maintained a double-digit lead early in the first half, with back-to-back layups from Robert Pericolosi and Gentile keeping the lead at 14 points six minutes into the action. However, the Highlanders weren't prepared to go away and slowly climbed back into the game, ultimately tying the score at 59-59 with nine minutes to play.
- Later in the half with the score tied at 68, Pericolosi scored back-to-back layups to make it a four point advantage for Geneseo. The Knights never allowed Houghton to tie the score again, and the win was capped off by a steal from Trevor Hofer with less than five seconds to play as Houghton needed a three to force overtime.
QUICK FACTS:
- Garelle posted a monster double-double for the Knights, registering a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds.
- Justin Yearwood tacked on 18 points and nine boards, while Pericolosi and Gentile chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively.
- Geneseo dominated the paint, scoring 56 of their 79 points from inside while limiting Houghton to just 34.

The Knights game at Brockport, originally scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 27, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, Feb. 3. Geneseo's next game will now be Friday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Schrader Gym against Hartwick.
