Men's Basketball Pulls Out Overtime Win At Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's basketball team picked up an overtime win at Alfred on Friday evening, pulling out a thrilling 68-67 win. The victory improves the Knights record to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in Empire 8 action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights got off to a slow start, trailing 11-4 six minutes into the opening half. Trevor Hofer sparked the offense shortly after, scoring five unanswered points with a three and a fast break layup off a steal and assist from Josh Garelle. The Knights went on to make it a 9-0, as buckets from Robert Pericolosi and Ethan Meisel made it 13-11.
  • The game continued its back and forth play for the remaining minutes of the first half, but Landon Brunken flipped the momentum in their favor with a steal and fast break layup in the final five seconds to make it 27-25 for Geneseo.
  • Jackson Casey kept the momentum going to start the second half, leading it off with a three. The Knights went on to extend the lead to as many as eight points halfway through the second half, but the Saxons were able to slowly chip away at the lead.
  • With the score tied at 58 in the closing minutes, Pericolosi and Justin Yearwood each made a free throw to go up by two, but Alfred was able to tie the game and send it to overtime. The Knights trailed early in overtime, but three free throws by Trevor Hofer in the final 90 seconds gave the Knights a one point lead that they were able to hold onto down the stretch for the 68-67 victory.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Pericolosi and Hofer led the offensive effort with 20 points each, with Pericolosi shooting 8-11 from the field.
  • Garelle chipped in 14 points of his own, while adding a team-high nine rebounds.
