Women's Basketball Defeats St. John Fisher, 71-65

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team defeated St. John Fisher on Saturday afternoon in Schrader gym by a score of 71-65. The win improves the Knights record to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in Empire 8 action, while the Cardinals fall to 4-8 and 1-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Geneseo came out firing on offense, jumping ahead 9-0 in the first two and a half minutes, led by four points from Kristin Suydam and three from Maggie McGrane. Geneseo maintained the lead throughout the first quarter, leading 17-11 going into the second.
  • The Cardinals put together a strong second quarter, holding the Knights scoreless for a six minute stretch, and they were able to take advantage of their defensive effort and go into halftime with a 32-27 advantage.
  • Grace Galgano got the Knights going out of halftime, scoring on back-to-back drives to cut into the Cardinals deficit. Following Galgano's points was a three from Suydam and a layup by Audrey Hintz, which put the Knights back ahead at 36-35 just four minutes into the quarter.
  • After winning the third quarter by a margin of 23-11, Geneseo kept their foot on the gas and extended the lead to 10 points in the fourth quarter, allowing them to close out the 71-65 victory.
QUICK FACTS:
  • McGrane notched her second 20-point game of the weekend, dropping 23 points in the win and going 13-14 from the free throw line.
  • Galgano led the rebounding effort with six, while adding 16 points. Suydam chipped in 15 of her own, while Hintz added 11.
  • The Knights dominated the paint, scoring 30 of their 71 points inside while limiting the Cardinals to just 18 points.

Geneseo will head on the road next week, going to Elmira on Tuesday, followed by SUNY Poly and Utica on the weekend.
