Women's Volleyball Earns Hard-Fought Split At Skidmore Classic

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team competed against Johnson & Wales University and Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon. The Knights were defeated 3-2 against Johnson & Wales, and won 3-1 over Skidmore to move to 3-4 on the season.
 
Geneseo vs Johnson & Wales
  • Johnson & Wales cruised ahead to start off the first set, until Geneseo began to mount a comeback. Trailing 17-12, Daphne Paul-LaRonca sparked the rally with a service ace, and Peyton Cole followed up with three clutch kills to tie the game at 18. From there, the Knights kept their foot on the gas, pulling out a thrilling 30-28 victory.
  • In the second set, Johnson & Wales maintained a steady lead until the Knights clawed their way back to even the score at 17. Ellie McLennan recorded a service ace, followed by a kill from Carolyn Mack that put Geneseo in front. The Knights stayed strong down the stretch, closing out the set with a 25-23 win.
  • The third set was another hard-fought battle, with the lead shifting back-and-forth between both teams. Geneseo took advantage of some attack errors, but it wasn't enough, as Johnson & Wales pulled away to secure a 25-20 win.
  • Geneseo got off to a slow start in the fourth set, and Johnson & Wales capitalized on the opportunity. The Knights began to close the gap at 20-14, with Cory Elder delivering three consecutive service aces while Sydney Leigh-Mannuell chipped in with two kills to cut the deficit to 20-18. However, Johnson & Wales held their ground, taking a 25-20 win over Geneseo.
  • With the fifth set being the deciding factor, it was a race to 15, with Johnson & Wales coming out hot. Despite a strong push from Geneseo, they weren't able to finish off the comeback and ultimately fell short, losing 15-13.
 
Geneseo vs Skidmore
  • Skidmore jumped out to an early four-point lead before the Knights were able to get on the board in the opening set. Geneseo battled back to close the gap and stay within striking distance, but Skidmore held on to claim a 25-19 win.
  • In the second set, the Knights responded back without giving up the lead, taking a 27-25 victory. Ayla Pas'cal played a key role with four kills, while Paul-LaRonca sparked the offense with back-to-back service aces.
  • Geneseo carried their momentum into the third set, picking up a 25-15 win. The Knights maintained offensive pressure throughout, led by Leigh-Mannuell's five kills while Kathryn Barba contributed with three.
  • The fourth set was tight until the Knights pulled ahead at 17-13. From there, Geneseo stayed on the attack and closed out a 25-19 win over Skidmore.
 
Quick Facts
  • Zooey Gagnier recorded a team-high 36 digs on the day, and was named to the All-Tournament Team for Geneseo.
  • Carolyn Mack tallied 60 total assists between both matches.

The Knights will travel to Rochester to face Buffalo State on Friday, September 12th at 4 p.m.
