Field Hockey Upends William Smith, 5-2

GENESEO, N.Y. - The No. 21 SUNY Geneseo field hockey team stayed hot to open its 2025 season, defeating William Smith 5-2 on Wednesday evening. The Knights are now 3-0 to begin the year, while the Herons were handed their first loss as they sit at 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • William Smith came out of the gates firing, scoring a goal in the first two minutes of action. However, Geneseo was quick to respond as Aubree Wenner scored a goal in the ninth minute off a pass from Sam Lewis, then Ava Harman registered an unassisted goal in the 13th minute to make it a 2-1 advantage heading to the second quarter.
  • Lewis added to the Knights lead in the second quarter with an unassisted goal, and the defense held strong to maintain the 3-1 lead going into halftime.
  • The Herons brought it back within one goal early in the third quarter, but once again Geneseo had the answer as Ella Greico scored in the third to regain the two-goal advantage. In the fourth quarter, Lewis tallied her second goal of the game, helping secure the 5-2 victory.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Lewis led the offensive effort with two goals and one assist, improving her season point total to seven. Greico recorded her team-high fourth goal of the year, while Harman improved her point total to six on the season with a goal and an assist.
  • Bridget Schafer earned her third win of the season in goal, playing all 60 minutes and registering four saves.
  • The Knights have now won six of the last eight matchups against William Smith.
