Field Hockey Celebrates Senior Day With 2-0 Win Over Hartwick

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team celebrated senior day on Saturday, Sept. 27 with a 2-0 victory over Hartwick. The Knights improve to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in Empire 8 action. The team honored its three seniors, Shannon Cunningham, Sam Lewis, and Natalie Riedy, with a brief post game ceremony.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights put the pressure on early, registering six shots on goal and six penalty corners in the first quarter, but they couldn't find a way to take the lead and entered the second quarter tied 0-0.
  • Geneseo broke through the Hawks defense in the second quarter, earning a penalty stroke that Cunningham converted just over three minutes in.
  • Both defenses put together a strong third quarter, with both teams only recording one shot each with the Knights earning three penalty corners.
  • Aubree Wenner extended the lead for Geneseo in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, scoring off a pass from Ava Harman. The Hawks continued to press to try and come back, tallying five penalty corners, but the Knights defense held strong and earned the shutout win.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Cunningham tallied her third goal of the year, while Wenner notched her seventh for 15 points on the season.
  • Harman picked up her team-leading eighth assist of the season, helping the Knights win the rematch of last season's Empire 8 title game.
  • Bridget Schafer played all 60 minutes in goal to record the shutout victory.
