Field Hockey Opens Season With 2-0 Victory Over RPI

GENESEO, N.Y. - The No. 21 SUNY Geneseo field hockey team opened up its 2025 campaign with a 2-0 victory over RPI. The win marks the third-straight time that the Knights have opened their season with a victory over the Engineers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Geneseo and RPI played strong defense to begin the game, but Shannon Cunningham and the Knights got on the board first with just over 30 seconds remaining in the quarter. Kyra Giannelli played a great pass off of a corner, then Cunningham grabbed the rebound off a shot from Ava Harman and scored the first goal of the season for Geneseo.
  • Neither team was able to score in the second quarter, but the Engineers entered the second half with a 9-4 penalty corner advantage.
  • Geneseo's defense continued to stifle RPI in the second half, limiting them to zero shots on goal. Harman added to Geneseo's lead early in the fourth quarter, making a great individual effort to get past the goalie and easily put the ball into the goal.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Harman scored and assisted in the game for three points to begin her sophomore campaign.
  • Bridget Schafer earns her first win in goal, playing all 60 minutes and stopping five shots on goal for a shutout.
  • Geneseo now holds a 5-3 all-time record against RPI.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Knights return to College Stadium tomorrow at 1 p.m. for a game against Kenyon.
