Softball Splits Doubleheader At Brockport

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team traveled to Brockport on Thursday afternoon for an Empire 8 doubleheader, and came away with a 9-1 victory in game two. The Knights move to 22-10 on the season and 11-5 in conference action while Brockport is 11-19 and 3-13 in the Empire 8.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the opening game, Tara Brochu and Molly Griffin picked up RBI hits to give Geneseo a 2-0 lead, but after three runs from the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the fifth, the Knights trailed 3-2.
  • Lauren Bieniek recorded an RBI single in the top of the 7th to tie the game, but Brockport was able to escape with a 4-3 win in the bottom of the 7th.
  • The Knights quickly took a 5-0 lead in game two, with Bella Nadzan, Brooke Fraas, and Ray Schumacher all recording RBIs in the five-run second inning. In the third inning, Nadzan picked up an RBI double, then scored off a single from Sierra VanDerwarker to make it 7-0.
  • Geneseo would secure the 9-1, five-inning win in the fifth inning as Fraas knocked in two runs off a double to centerfield. 
QUICK FACTS:
  • Griffin went 4-4 at the plate in game one, while Brochu and Bieniek tallied three and two hits, respectively. Fraas, VanDerwarker, Lauren Babich, and Gabriella Petroski all led the offense with two hits in game two.
  • Petroski tallied her 10th win of the season, throwing all five innings and allowing just one run on five hits. Schmitz pitched game one for Geneseo and allowed three earned runs while striking out four.

Geneseo will travel to Sage tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
