GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team earned a split against St. John Fisher on Saturday afternoon after sophomore pitcher
Gabriella Petroski shut out the Cardinals for a 2-0 game two win. The Knights move to 20-8 overall and 10-4 in Empire 8 action this year, while the Cardinals are now 21-12 and 13-3 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In game one, the Knights found themselves in an early deficit, trailing 5-0. Gabriella Smith put Geneseo on the board in the second inning with an RBI triple that scored Tara Brochu, but St. John Fisher's lead was too large to mount a comeback and they ultimately fell, 10-1.
- Game two of the doubleheader saw a pitching dual, with the score tied at 0-0 through five innings. The Knights broke through however in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Smith once again came up with a clutch hit, this time scoring Claire Kubiak off a bases loaded single.
- Lauren Bieniek tacked on an insurance run for Geneseo, scoring Ray Schumacher off a hard ground ball to the shortstop. Petroski continued to lock up the Cardinals offense in the top of the seventh, securing the 2-0 win for the Knights.
QUICK FACTS:
- Smith led the offense with two out of the three RBIs recorded for Geneseo, while Schumacher went 3-5 at the plate between the two games.
- Petroski earned her eighth win of the season with the complete game shutout, only allowing four hits from St. John Fisher. Petroski now boasts a team-best 2.84 ERA on the season.
- The Knights currently sit in a tie for third in the Empire 8 standings with 20 points on their 10-4 record.
