GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team capped off its impressive start to the 2025 season with their final two games in Florida on Friday morning. The Knights were able to pull out a pair of wins, defeating Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) 17-4 and Smith College 8-2. The wins improve Geneseo's record to 8-3, their best start to a season since the 2022 season.
The Knights wasted no time jumping ahead of MSOE, tallying 11 runs in the top of the first inning.
Lauren Bieniek highlighted the inning with three RBIs, the first coming on a bases loaded walk and the next two on a home run to cap off the 11 run inning.
Tara Brochu and
Gabriella Smith each chipped in a two RBI double in the inning as well, with Geneseo totaling an impressive 10 hits in the frame. The Knights tacked on six more runs in the game to secure the 17-4 victory in five innings.
Kaitlyn Schmitz and
Ray Schumacher recorded identical stat lines in the batters box, going 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Brooke Fraas chipped in two hits, three RBIs and four runs scored, while Brochu and
Emily Sylvanus each went 2-3 at the plate as well. Schmitz capped off her spring break trip by improving to 4-0 as a starter for the Knights, throwing all five innings.
Geneseo continued the momentum into the second game, taking an early 4-0 lead on Smith.
Gabriella Petroski opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second inning, then a Schumacher RBI double and
Molly Griffin two RBI single brought the score to 4-0 in the third inning. Smith got one run back, but in the bottom of the fourth Schmitz knocked in a run with a double, then later scored on a passed ball to go up by five runs. Griffin capped off the scoring for the Knights with an RBI single to center, helping secure the 8-2 victory. Griffin was perfect at the plate, going 4-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Schmitz, Bieniek, Schumacher, and Petroski each added two hits as well. Petroski pitched all seven innings for Geneseo and got the win with no earned runs allowed and six hits.
The Knights will host their first doubleheader of the year on Wednesday, March 26 at 3 p.m. against Fredonia.
