GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team began Empire 8 action on Friday afternoon at Vic Raschi Field, and picked up a sweep of Keuka with scores of 9-1 and 10-1. The Knights improve to 10-3 on the season, while the Wolves fall to 1-11.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Keuka was able to strike first in the opening game, leading 1-0 after scoring in the top of the fourth inning to break the 0-0 tie. The Knights left a runner stranded each of the first four innings, but were able to break through in the bottom of the fifth with a seven-run inning.
- Sierra VanDerwarker opened up the inning with a leadoff double, then tied the game at 1-1 off an RBI from Brooke Fraas. Fraas came around to score two batters later, to give Geneseo the lead, then Lauren Bieniek drilled a two RBI double to make it 4-1. Bella Nadzan chipped in a two RBI double, and VanDerwarker concluded the scoring with an RBI single.
- The Knights were able to end game one in the bottom of the sixth after scoring two runs to make it a 9-1 victory.
- In the second game, Geneseo wasted no time jumping ahead on Keuka, leading 10-1 after three innings of play. Molly Griffin highlighted the early offense from the Knights, picking up three RBIs in the first two innings as they led 4-0.
- Geneseo's offense put together a six-run rally in the bottom of the third to make it a 10-1 advantage, then closed out the Wolves in five innings to go 2-0 in Empire 8 play.
QUICK FACTS:
- Kaitlyn Schmitz threw all six innings in the opener, only allowing one run, then Gabriella Petroski followed it up in game two with five innings pitched, two hits, and no earned runs allowed.
- Bieniek led the offense in game one, going 2-3 with three RBIs, while Griffin went 2-2 with four RBIs in the second game to lead the Knights.
- Griffin now leads Geneseo in batting average at .565, with Fraas posting a team-best 11 RBIs.Â
- Head coach Dave Sylvester has now tied the program record for career wins as a coach with 258.
