Women's Lacrosse Falls Just Short At Shenandoah, 14-13

WINCHESTER, V.A. - The SUNY Geneseo women's lacrosse team was unable to complete an impressive comeback at Shenandoah on Wednesday afternoon, ultimately falling 14-13. The Knights dip to 2-5 on the season while the Hornets improve to 5-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Shenandoah got off to a hot start, jumping ahead 3-0 in the first seven minutes of play. Olivia Luchetti and Maddie Brown both found the back of the net to put the Knights on the board, but they entered the second quarter facing a three-goal deficit.
  • Back-to-back goals from Natalie Long and Alaina Reina helped cut the Hornets lead down to two midway through the second quarter, but Shenandoah was able to keep momentum on their side in the closing minutes and go to halftime with a four-goal lead.
  • Following an early goal from the Hornets in the third period, Geneseo was able to flip the script in the game, and rattle off seven-straight goals to take their first lead of the game at 11-9 heading to the final 15 minutes. Rosemary Mahoney highlighted the run with a pair of goals, while the Knights had five others score during the impressive run: Long, Reina, Dany Emler, Katie Rajkowski, and Lila Warner.
  • Shenandoah had the answer to Geneseo's impressive third quarter early in the fourth, but once again the Knights found a way to battle back from a deficit and tied the game at 13-13 following back-to-back goals from Rajkowski and Brown. Unfortunately, the Hornets were able to find the game-winner with just over 90 seconds to play, and Geneseo's comeback attempt fell just short.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Geneseo saw five players score two goals each (Brown, Reina, Mahoney, Long, and Rajkowski), while Brown led the team in points at four with two goals and two assists.
  • Emler, Grace Geary, and Emily DeJohn tallied three ground balls each to lead Geneseo, while DeJohn played all 60 minutes in goal with six saves.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Knights will return to College Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. to take on Hartwick in their first Empire 8 contest.
