Softball Opens Season With Wins Over New Paltz and Rutgers-Camden

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team opened up its 2025 season on Saturday in Florida, and came away with two wins over New Paltz (8-0) and Rutgers-Camden (8-4).

The Knights began their season with a bang, as Ray Schumacher drilled a two-out home run in the first inning to give Geneseo a quick 2-0 lead over the Hawks. The Knights worked their way out of a jam in the top of the second after a lead off double, then tacked on two more runs in the third inning with back-to-back bases loaded walks. Lauren Babich and Tara Brochu drew the walks for Geneseo. The Knights continued to pad the lead as the game went on, with Hannah Olejniczak and Emily Sylvanus scoring on a passed ball and wild pitch in the fourth inning. Bella Nadzan capped off the win with a two RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 8-0 victory.

Kaitlyn Schmitz her debut on the mound this season for Geneseo, and threw six scoreless innings while only allowing three hits. Schumacher, Nadzan, and Schmitz all recorded two hits in the game.

Against Rutgers-Camden, Geneseo got on the board first again, this time with Kuneth delivering an RBI single to score Schumacher. Camden answered back in the bottom half of the first, but then the Knights rattled off seven unanswered runs after that. Amanda Audia, Molly Griffin, and Haley Coombs delivered RBI singles in the second and third, then Brooke Fraas brought in two runs with a single of her own. Sierra VanDerwarker and Kuneth capped off the scoring with an RBI each in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively.

Gabriella Petroski pitched all seven innings for the Knights, only allowing five hits and three earned runs. Geneseo had seven different players record an RBI in the game, while Griffin, Audia, and Petroski all recorded two hits each.

The Knights will return to action tomorrow against Buffalo St. and Trinity, beginning at 2 p.m.
