Atkinson Powers Men's Lacrosse To 16-14 Win Over Maritime

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Maritime and picking up a 16-14 victory. Senior attacker Jimmy Atkinson led the Knights to the win, tallying seven goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights opened up the game strong, taking a 3-0 lead inside the first three minutes behind goals from Aksel Stanat, Atkinson, and Riley Henselder. Geneseo held on to a three goal lead at 5-2 with two minutes left to play in the first quarter, but the Privateers were able to flip the momentum before the quarter with a pair of goals in the closing minutes.
  • Atkinson, Max Esposito, and Aidan Crane notched three-straight goals all within a minute of each other to open up the scoring in the second quarter. Stanat tallied his second goal of the game to give the Knights their biggest lead of the game at 9-4, and Geneseo went on to hold an 11-7 advantage going to half.
  • Maritime came out hot in the third quarter, winning the period by a margin of 5-2, and went on to tie the game at 13-13 with the first goal of the fourth quarter.
  • Atkinson came up clutch for the Knights down the stretch of the fourth quarter, putting up back-to-back goals to break the tie and take a 15-13 lead with 3:38 left to play. Esposito tallied another insurance goal for the Knights as they went on to win by a score of 16-14.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Atkinson led all scorers with seven goals, adding him to the program records books for third-most goals scored in a game.
  • Henselder recorded six points offensively, with two goals and four assists.
  • Aidan Crane led the Knights with six ground balls, while Jake Starkey went 22-31 on faceoffs.
  • Andrew Tittman earned the win in goal with 12 saves.
