Men's Lacrosse Falls at #6 RPI in Season Opener

TROY, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's lacrosse team traveled to No. 6 RPI for their season opener on Saturday, Feb. 22, and couldn't pull out a win, falling 19-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Riley Henselder opened the scoring for the Knights and helped tie the game at 1-1 after an early goal from the Engineers, scoring in the fifth minute of action off an assist from Colin Cahill.
  • Jimmy Atkinson netted the second goal for Geneseo to keep the score within two goals at 4-2, then later in the second quarter Atkinson assisted on a goal to Luca Schettino, bringing the score to 5-3. Unfortunately, RPI was able to extend the lead to 8-3 before halftime.
  • The Knights were unable to put together a comeback attempt early in the second half, falling behind 17-5 after the third quarter. Geneseo scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter from Atkinson, Ian Leahey, and Henselder, but ultimately fell, 19-9.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Henselder and Atkinson each recorded a team-high four points, while Henselder scoring three times and Atkinson twice.
  • Nick Reffelt tallied four caused turnovers, and Andrew Tittmann put up 16 saves in goal.

Geneseo will travel to Ithaca on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m.
