GENESEO, N.Y. - The No. 22 SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team came up short in a top-25 matchup to open their season, falling to No. 2 Scranton, 60-35.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Knights came out strong on the defensive end, keeping the Royals off the scoreboard for over four minutes to start the game. A pair of buckets from Maggie McGrane put Geneseo ahead 4-0 as the first quarter approached the halfway mark, then the Knights kept the momentum going with a three-point play by Eva Elliot and layup by Audrey Hintz to take a 9-2 lead.
- With a 12-8 advantage heading to the second quarter, Geneseo's defense couldn't keep Scranton's offense at bay, and the Royals jumped ahead at halftime, 30-19.
- The Knights came out of halftime strong, going on a 7-2 run to cut the lead down to six. Jordyn Townes capped off the run with her first collegiate points as she drained a corner three off a pass from Grace Galgano.
- Scranton was able to pull away late in the game, and escaped with a 60-35 win.
QUICK FACTS:
- McGrane led the Knights offense with 10 points, while Galgano chipped in team-highs in rebounds with eight and blocks with three.
- Geneseo's defense limited Scranton to just 10.5 percent shooting from three, as the Royals went 2-19.
