Men's Basketball Wins Home Opener Against Alfred St., 87-60

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's basketball team defeated Alfred St. on Tuesday evening in their home opener, 87-60. The Knights improve to 3-4 with the win, while the Pioneers fall to 1-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights offense came out hot and allowed them to withstand a flurry of points from the Alfred St. point guard, Mykell Lawson, who scored the Pioneers first 13 points in the first five minutes of action. Geneseo answered Alfred St. with a balanced attack, as four different Knights scored to maintain a 14-13 lead.
  • The game remained close as the first half went on, but after the score was tied at 22-22, Geneseo went on a 12-5 run to take control of the game. Free throws from Landon Brunken and Jaiyden Jones, and a jump shot from Ethan Meisel down the stretch kep the Knights ahead by seven heading to halftime.
  • The Knights quickly extended the lead to 12 points to start the second half, but Alfred St. wasn't ready to go away and cut the deficit down to five. Geneseo never let the game get within one possession however, and five unanswered points from Brunken brought the lead to 13 at 62-49 with 11 minutes to go.
  • The Knights continued their strong play on both ends of the ball, going on to out-score the Pioneers 47-27 in the second half to secure the 87-60 victory.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Robert Pericolosi led the team in scoring with 20, shooting 9-16 from the field and adding eight rebounds.
  • Josh Garelle notched a double-double on 15 points and 10 boards, while Trevor Hofer also added double-digit scoring at 10 points.
  • The Knights won the turnover battle by a margin of 19-8, and dominated the paint with 48 points scored compared to 22 from the Pioneers.
