Women's Basketball Knocks Off Rochester Behind Dominant Second Quarter

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team competed at the University of Rochester on Friday night and secured a 66-58 victory. With the win, the Knights improved to a 3-1 overall record.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both teams traded points early in the first quarter, but Rochester managed to scrape by with a 16-13 lead over the Knights as the clock expired.
  • The momentum shifted in the second quarter, as the Knights hit their stride and out-scored the Yellowjackets 21-4. Geneseo closed the half with a comfortable 34-20 advantage. Maggie McGrane powered the Knights' offense with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, while Grace Galgano added five points.
  • Geneseo struck first to begin the third quarter, with McGrane knocking down a fast-break jumper in the paint. The Knights kept their energy high, though the Yellow Jackets managed to chip away the lead. Despite the efforts by Rochester, the Knights held strong and closed the quarter with a 47-40 advantage.
  • Geneseo refused to let up in the fourth, adding 19 more points and securing a 66-58 win over the Yellowjackets. Aliza Whitehead went 4-for-4 on the free-throw line in the final frame, while Kristin Suydam contributed four points on a pair of layups.
 QUICK FACTS:
  • McGrane recorded a team-high 26 points while going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and 9-for-13 from the field.
  • Galgano led the Knights on the boards with 10 rebounds (3 offensive, 7 defensive).
  • The second quarter was dominant on both ends of the floor for the Knights, shooting 8-for-15 from the field, while holding Rochester to just nine shots total, only sinking one.

The Knights will now compete in the championship game of the Chuck Resler Tournament, tomorrow evening against Springfield at 8 p.m.
